Gone are the days of giving students a list of vocabulary terms that they are expected to define, memorize and test over. This year I want my students to own their words. Each week, students are to look for "Titanium" level words from their AR books or from the stories that we are reading and list them onto their bookmarks. These are words that they have to look up in order to know the definition or use context clues in order to understand the meaning. They then take these words and show the meaning of the words in their Vocabulary Collectors portion of their notebooks. They have been shown several different ways to display the meaning and use a different method for each term.
I have to give credit for these ideas to another ELA teacher that I found while cruising the internet looking for ideas for the classroom this year. I studied his methods, and decided to use a few of his ideas while changing them making them my own so that they fit the needs of my classroom and for my students. So far, I am very pleased with what these assignments are doing my students and for the creativity and knowledge they are gaining from them.
